The experience of living through the pandemic, unprecedented in its spread and impact- the feelings of overwhelm, terror and helplessness, loss of lives and livelihoods, worry about uncertainty, safety and survival, have escalated psychosocial distress and disturbances.
The experience of a traumatic event can profoundly impact the Mental Health and psychosocial well-being of a person, of families, groups and communities. The experience particularly impactful for those who have a history of other related or unrelated stressful experiences, because of the way it disrupts our personal sense of normalcy, safety and routine.
Bapu, along with partners – Just Being Center and Bodhi Awakening Foundation – conceptualized and designed the “Recovery from Trauma- Psychosocial support and skills” capacity building program, in response to the impending and emerging mental health crisis and trauma support needs among families and communities, in aftermath of CoVid.
Course curriculum is based on the recognition of the pervasiveness of trauma and its impact on people’s experiences of psychosocial distress and disability, especially in low income communities and in the aftermath of Corona. Course offers a simple framework of trauma, designed for application among grassroots communities.
The course brings knowledge about trauma as located in the body, and having the innate resources capable of overcoming trauma and regenerating wellbeing; drawing from mindfulness, creative arts in play, neurosciences, cognitive sciences and disability inclusion – areas.
The Course will help trainees in:
1. Developing an understanding of Trauma
2. Practicing the skills to conduct assessment of trauma
3. Provide simple supports and interventions for those in need
4. Developing an ethical framework of Trauma support
5. Developing skills to design community strategies to ‘build back better’- a more resilient and inclusive community.
Recovery from Trauma- Support Skills, Batch 2 Proposed Schedule
star_rate I was able to practice. We learnt and understood about body and breath, how this is affecting mental health. For self understanding and care also it was useful. Groups and individuals, for both modalities this was useful. We used to practice onourselves. Noticing our own breathing, our own regulation and co-regulation- this comes with only practice. We are more confident in sessions with this training. Community build back session was most useful. We work in communities, but started working with trauma perspective: How to communicate, use simple language, not to use jargon, how to break down trauma knowledge and practice in community life. This trauma work is not easy. But when you accept that, work with yourself, resolve it, then we can work with our clients and our communities. I was really fascinated by the Trauma course.Supervision session was very helpful. We can keep refreshing and should continue. Enjoyed it all. Thank you! star_rate star_rate star_rate star_rate Deepali Kshirsagar
star_rate Self practice was most important for me. Through this, I could strengthen my own conviction and then to continuously practice. This was one of my key takeaways. The role I play is of HR in my organization. I was able to support persons who were going through a lot in their lives. I was able to use breathwork. I was able to have concrete logic to explain it. People are surprised, how such a simple and easy thing can help me? But with daily practice they notice it does. We are working on a curriculum for young people in conflict areas. The community session is helping me to develop this… To strengthen the work that I am already doing. Thank you!! star_rate star_rate star_rate star_rate Nivedita Soni
star_rate One client used to just talk about himself. When we started group up, I saw such extraordinary changes in him. How much I could experience calmness, he could also do that. I have also experienced this in my own self. Daily breathing is something that will accumulate change over
a period of time. But this can happen. That confidence I got from my group work. Thank you for this opportunity. star_rate star_rate star_rate star_rate Ratna Byagary
star_rate A person who passes through a lot of trauma (daily), we have a different perspective on this.We start noticing body related events. We got a new way of noticing this. I got this through this training. Applied on my client – He was going through a lot. I took many many activities with them. He gave me a lot of complaints in his body. This is going on, this is going on… He started seeing his own body and experiences in a very different way. He doesn’t complain a lot, the way he looked at his body is changing. A unique way of looking at psychosocial experience. star_rate star_rate star_rate star_rate Almas
star_rate I am very glad that I was a part of the training. Could not help thinking that it would have been more fun if it had been done physically. We learnt a lot from the supervision sessions. How to hold a group for 6 to 9 months. I was able to take the theory to the practical world. I learnt that I am expecting way too much outcomes, so much movement should happen, breath should be totally normal, etc. With supervision, I learnt to see what means ‘change’. Small small changes made a great impact on people’s lives, they appreciate that, and can resource that. Self practice was useful and helpful to self and to clients. I started feeling less about myself, because I couldn’t practice on myself, not meeting my own expectations. Being totally observant, verbal and non verbal cues. How to increase observation on non verbal, embodied cues. star_rate star_rate star_rate star_rate Paurnami
star_rate To be able to have this kind of format (online) I was unbelievably fortunate. If it was in person, I was able to see, the difference is huge. The exercises created as a group in a way that I found them very very helpful, and we were also doing it together. Doing the practice as a group, there is a group to talk to, discuss, share concerns, ideas, questions. Was insightful, and to see how people struggling and also resolving and moving on. Real experience of the practice has been staggering for me. Difference in my own ability to respond to my triggering has vastly improved.Individual support is coming along slowly. People are so interested in it. Mostly working with domestic violence, grief and loss, dealing with prolonged illness, etc. There are one or two things they are able to apply themselves. Triggers don’t leave….. they don’t leave. But we can notice. Awareness is increasing a lot. To be observing is itself gratifying. The faculty has been so accessible that we can contact you when we need. Thank you so much for this course. star_rate star_rate star_rate star_rate Tarang
